ABOUT ABOUT

Classic Album Sundays is the world’s most popular listening experience and Kansas City is now part of this worldwide series.  Classic Album Sundays provides an immersive experience where you will not only hear the story behind the album but will also hear it in a way you never have before on world class hi-fi equipment.

Motown’s slogan was “The Sound of Young America” but the America they traditionally depicted was one of the affluent postwar years.  Owned and operated by African-Americans it was the most successful label of its kind, but the musical output was generally fantastically catchy sugar-coated pop songs featuring great musicianship.

Marvin Gaye had to fight the Motown machine to get this album made.  Inflation, war, environmental degradation, overpopulation, protests and social upheaval are the themes of this seminal album. 'What's Going On' is still regarded as one of the best albums of all time. The music itself has stood the test of time and has remained Marvin Gaye’s and arguably Motown’s most important musical and social statement.

'What's Going On' was both an immediate commercial and critical success and has endured as a classic of early-1970s soul. In worldwide critics', artists' and public surveys, it has been voted one of the landmark recordings in pop music history and is considered to be one of the greatest albums ever made.  In 2003, the album was ranked number six on Rolling Stone's list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time", and then again in the same place on that list in 2012.
